About this trip

Three nights in Beijing introduce the architecture and landscapes of imperial China. Move through the fifteenth-century Forbidden City, visit the UNESCO-listed Temple of Heaven, enjoy Peking duck and explore the Summer Palace before walking a scenic mountain section of the Great Wall. A domestic flight then opens a completely different chapter in Zhangjiajie. Paths and viewpoints weave through Wulingyuan's quartz-sandstone pillars, scenery associated with the visual inspiration for Avatar. Rise on the 326-metre Bailong Elevator, recognised by Guinness World Records as the tallest outdoor elevator, and cross the 430-metre bridge above Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. Yellow Dragon Cave adds an underground boat section, while Tianmen Mountain brings cableway views, high paths, the 999-step staircase and the natural arch of Heaven's Gate before departure.

Beijing

Beijing's Imperial Heart, Temple of Heaven and Peking Duck

Enter the Forbidden City, built from 1406 to 1420 and used by 14 Ming and 10 Qing emperors. Follow its ceremonial axis through monumental gates, courtyards and throne halls, then continue to the UNESCO-listed Temple of Heaven. The complex's ritual buildings and carefully ordered spaces reflect imperial ceremonies once performed for a good harvest. In the evening, gather for a Peking duck dinner served with pancakes, vegetables and sauce.
