Yunnan and Shangri-La: Karst, Naxi Heritage and Monasteries

Arrive in Kunming and transfer to the hotel for check-in. In the evening, walk through the old-city quarter around Kunming Old Street, passing narrow lanes, teahouses, shops and local food stalls. The first day concludes with dinner in a Yunnan restaurant, an introduction to the province's aromatic herbs, mushrooms and varied regional cooking.

Travel to Shilin and enter the Stone Forest, part of the UNESCO-listed South China Karst. Limestone formations shaped over more than 270 million years rise in dense clusters along the walking route. After lunch, visit Yunnan Ethnic Village, a cultural park presenting representative architecture, costumes, music and crafts associated with communities including the Naxi, Dai, Yi and Bai. Performances and displays offer a curated introduction to Yunnan's cultural diversity.

Leave Kunming and travel towards Lijiang as the road climbs into cooler mountain scenery. Check in at the hotel near the foot of the mountains, then take an evening walk through the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Lijiang. Timber houses, stone lanes, canals and bridges form a historic townscape shaped by several cultural traditions, while squares, teahouses and flowing water give the old quarter its distinctive rhythm.

Travel into the protected landscape of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, where high peaks, changing vegetation zones and glacial landforms rise above Lijiang. Pause in a flower-filled valley below the mountain, with blossoms at their best in the warmer seasons, then continue to Blue Moon Valley for turquoise water, cascades and alpine views. Walk beside the mountain lakes and, when weather permits, choose an optional cableway journey towards the higher glacier scenery.

Visit Baisha Old Town and walk through its lanes among traditional houses and local workshops. Meet artisans working with crafts such as weaving, embroidery or musical instruments, depending on who is active that day. Continue to the Baisha murals, preserved in religious buildings and created during the Ming and Qing periods. Their imagery combines Naxi, Tibetan, Bai and Han artistic elements with several religious traditions.

Travel from Lijiang towards Shangri-La as the road climbs through mountain passes, gorges and conifer-covered valleys. The increasing elevation brings a clear change in landscape and pace. After arrival, check in at the Tibetan-style hotel and walk through Dukezong Old Town, a historic settlement on the Tea Horse Road. Cobbled lanes, prayer wheels, white stupas and timber balconies introduce the cultural setting of north-west Yunnan.

Spend the day at Ganden Sumtseling, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. The hillside complex rises above a lake, with golden roofs, courtyards and richly decorated halls forming its distinctive silhouette. Walk respectfully through the public areas, observe prayer wheels and devotional art, and learn how the monastery serves the region's Buddhist community. The visit offers time for quiet attention to architecture, ritual space and the highland setting.

Leave Shangri-La after breakfast and travel back through the mountains, valleys and forests towards Lijiang. On arrival, continue directly to the railway station or airport according to your onward plans. The Yunnan journey ends after moving from Kunming's karst landscape through Naxi heritage and snow-mountain scenery to the Tibetan Buddhist culture of Shangri-La.
