Begin beside the Yi River at the UNESCO-listed Longmen Grottoes, where more than 2,300 caves and niches hold almost 110,000 Buddhist stone figures. The cliffs preserve an exceptional record of sculpture, inscriptions and religious patronage created principally between the late fifth and mid-eighth centuries.
The second day turns to the monuments of Dengfeng at the foot of Mount Song. Visit Shaolin Temple and its Pagoda Forest, watch a scheduled martial-arts demonstration and enjoy a vegetarian lunch at the monastery restaurant. A walk in the Songshan landscape completes this concise cultural route before the return to Luoyang.
